Vivianâs ability to carry on with her life, to grow and change, even while keeping issues deeply inside that had no means of expression all those years, is a strong testimony to resilience.
Danny
âQuiet and Deepâ
Danny worked with younger children at the time of this story. Using a soft-spoken approach, he had no trouble challenging behaviors as needed.
When Danny was little, his babysitterâs younger siblings would come around, pick on, and bully him. He was a little kid who just stayed quiet, but he was confused and did not understand what to do. Danny could not see any reason why they picked on him.
He was upset, wounded on the inside, and felt stung by those blows. It was unconscionable to treat children that way, and it was appalling to hurt another person without provocation. Danny wanted neither to be in that position of inflicting pain, nor to be on the receiving end. He was all too familiar with what a devastating experience that could be.
Danny then talked about the breakup of his parents. This happened in his life during early elementary school. It took quite a while to understand that this situation was a long-term one. Mom told the boys about it, but to Danny it mostly meant that he, his brother, and his sister could sleep with their mom on certain nights. Dannyâs older brother understood more about what it meant for their futures.
Danny recognized that his dad was louder when arguments happened; it was his dadâs fault because of that loudness. His mom was tearful, but at the time, he did not sense permanence. It still meant there were times when he and his siblings could jump into their momâs bed. His dad visited routinely during the day, but these did not include stay overs. It started to dawn on Danny during one of his dadâs visits, however, that he really missed him. While running through the yard to hug his dad, Dannyâs eyes filled with tears and everything became blurry.
This particular day was a turning point for Danny on how to understand current family life. Fortunately, it started pleasantly for everyone. They visited throughout a good part of the day, and all the family members got along well. When Dannyâs dad started to say good-bye, Danny felt panicky. Among all family members, he was the only one crying. He felt strange and then the floodgates really opened up. Up until this moment in his young life, Danny thought you cried when you cut yourself or got hurt. Emotion was the word he used to describe these scenarios during our talk. What he went through just then was way over the edge, like a deluge. Danny did not say good-bye to his dad with the rest of the family. It was all too much. While hiding out in his room, he thought the family might think he had overdone the misery or the tears. It was later that he realized his reaction was perfectly normal for who he was at that time and age.
